Ellis Spear appears to be the first patent attorney to work with the Browning brothers, having filed their first four patents.
After a career in the military Mr. Spear entered the US Patent Office in 1865, where he would serve until 1878 working his way up to Commissioner. He then continued his career as a patent attorney in private practice, working closely with the patent office the rest of his life.
