Dieudonne Joseph Saive

1888-1970

Dieudonne [dee-you-don] Saive would spend nearly his entire career at Fabrique Nationale d’Armes de Guerre, better known as FN. His early career would distinguish him as a gifted engineer, often in the company of John Browning. After the Great War Saive is noted as working in the FN Armory, where he developed a double-stack pistol magazine for French military trials. He would quickly be promoted to Manager of Small Arms Production, and then Chief of New Armament Development. During the Second World War he would spend his time continuing small arms development with the other exiled heads of the FN corporation in Britain and Canada. In 1930 Saive would become chief weapons designer, a position formerly appointed to John Browning. Though often overshadowed by the Browning name, which was used to market his most successful pistol designs, Saive would stand tall among firearms designers in his own time and is now being recognized for his many remarkable contributions.
