Charles Newton

1870-1932

Charles Newton was an attorney whose lifelong hobby was the creation of new rifle cartridges. In addition to developing ammunition he also founded several companies to manufacture rifles in his own chamberings. He would import Mauser rifles and convert them for his proprietary cartridges in association with such men as Harry Pope and Frank Adolph. The outbreak of war, shortage of commercial ammunition, and later the Great Depression would stymie success in business. While none of his companies would prove profitable Newton’s experimental cartridges would have a lasting impact on the firearms industry. His pursuit of high velocity would set the groundwork for what today are known as magnum cartridges.
