During 1895 John Browning continued a flurry of innovative, albeit unwanted, shotgun development, with the design of US patent 550778.
During this time Winchester was looking for ways to correct shortcommings of the model 1893 shotgun. Rather than contribute toward those efforts, Browning continued developing entirely new designs which incorporated some of the features Winchester was looking for.
This shotgun presents two features that would strongly influence later designs. The most obvious feature is the double-hump shape of the receiver, which would become a hallmark of Browning shotguns and automatic rifles. The second feature is the lockwork, utilizing a set of locking lugs on the top of the breech block as well as a pair of links to raise and lower the breech block. The second feature would be adapted for use in a pistol, produced as the Colt 1900. Development of the Colt 1900 would lead to the model 1911.
