Browning’s first rifle design of 1884 is a variation of rifle action with which inventors had been experimenting since the 1870s. It features a tube magazine and lifter, sliding breech-block, and a modified toggle-lock. The locking mechanism incorporates the lever as part of the toggle. In this design Browning uses a moveable center pivot point for the lever. Browning would use this concept in many variations on later designs to produce unusually compact actions.
