John Browning’s third U.S. patent (No. 282839) was for a lever-action rifle made in 1882. As with Browning’s first designs this rifle is an exercise in stark simplicity. The most notable feature is a single piece forming the breech-block and lever which rotates at its forward end upon an attached extractor assembly. This arrangement would be experimented with and evolve throughout several subsequent designs.
