US patent No. 553864 is a pump action shotgun design by John Browning, submitted in 1894. Outwardly it resembles a Marlin style receiver. Internally it operates on a tipping breech block that moves side-to-side as the action is cycled. Like many designs purchased by Winchester, this was never produced. Rather, it was likely only acquired to limit design options for Winchester’s competitors.
One of the unique features of this design is its method of takedown. It is one of the only takedown systems designed by Browning, however, it was not incorporated into any Winchester rifles or shotguns.
