US Patent No. 499005 is a modification of a previous Browning design, US Patent No. 306577. It modified the action of the Winchester 1886 to fire a pistol cartridge.
After the release of the Marlin 1889 proved successful, Thomas Bennett sought to replace the out-dated Winchester 1873. According to Browning family tradition, in 1890 Bennett commissioned John Browning to design a pistol caliber carbine. The story goes that the prototype was firing after just two weeks and delivered to Winchester within 30 days. However, the design would not be submitted for patent until 1892 after the rifle was released for sale.
The design used the same locking assembly and fire control group, but with a redesigned carrier. The new rifle was smaller, lighter, and stronger than the model 1873 it replaced.
