US patent No. 492459 is the first Browning design to utilize an en bloc clip. The design would be purchased by Winchester but never put into production. While the commercial and military markets would not see this rifle, the same general arrangement would be used later with the Winchester 1895.

This design is arranged with a sliding breech-block, rear locking block, external hammer, and a lever which wraps around a central box magazine. Cartridges are held in a preloaded clip and the entire unit is inserted into the magazine. A magazine catch prevents the clip from rising under force from the follower. When the cartridges are expended from one clip another loaded clip is inserted and forces the empty clip out through an opening in the bottom of the magazine.
