US patent No. 487659 is a John Browning push action shotgun, but differs significantly from his previous push action rifle. Shotguns of this type would see brief popularity among competition trap-shooters until about 1910, being supplanted by automatic designs.
Where the previous push action used a two piece receiver, this design is arranged as a solid receiver with a tubular extension upon which the buttstock assembly slides. The breech-block slides within the receiver similar to a conventional design, but is attached at its rear to the buttstock assembly. When the action is cycled it is the receiver which is drawn forward and rearward rather than the breech-block.
