The rifle of US patent No. 486273 is an amalgamation of several previous John Browning designs. It combines the push action with a box magazine and en bloc clip. Like most of Browning’s designs from 1892, it was bought by Winchester but never produced.
The action is largely the same as that of patent No. 487659, with the carrier being replaced by a box magazine. The magazine is loaded with an en bloc cartridge clip, construction of which is similar to patent No. 286272. Cartridges are forced out of the magazine and into the barrel chamber by the breech-block. However, as a push action, it is the magazine that moves forward and rearward rather than the breech-block. As in previous en bloc designs, the cartridge clip is prevented from rising by a catch within the magazine. When another loaded clip is inserted the empty clip is forced out through a recess in the bottom of the magazine. This design uses a fully enclosed striker with no external cocking piece.
