US patent No. 465339 is for a rifle which adapts the Browning locking system of the Winchester 1886, US patent No. 306577, to use a detachable box magazine and a striker.
John Browning’s magazine differs from the Lee in that only a small opening in the upper rear of the magazine is made by which to feed cartridges. At the rear of the magazine a groove is made by pressing the metal inward to form rails which guide the rim of the cartridges. The guide rails allow a simple wire spring to be used without the need for a baseplate. Use of a torsion clockspring rather than the typical coil spring give the magazine the most compact arrangement possible.
The rifle also presents an arrangement by which the Model 1886 action is striker-fired. The mechanism is simple and automatically disconnected by the trigger’s movement with the lever.
