US patent No. 409599 is one of only two patented rifle designs by John Browning that Winchester did not purchase during their twenty year relationship.

This rifle features a right-side ejection typical of Marlin rifles. Its most unique feature is the use of a tilting bolt which rotates horizontally rather than vertically. The movement of the breech-block is effected by a modified carrier, or slide, similar to that used in Browning’s pump shotgun designs.
