US patent No. 358238 is the second of three John Browning designs that culminated in the Winchester 1890. It adapts the lever action of patent No. 324296 into a pump action rifle. The design was not developed by Winchester and likely only purchased after Browning began adapting it for .22 caliber rimfire cartridges.

While it utilizes the same locking action and T-shaped locking block as its predecessor, nearly every part has been significantly altered to operate as a pump action. Due to the movements of the carrier and breech-block this design is best suited to shorter, pistol length, cartridges.
