US patent No. 345882 is the second John Browning pump action shotgun. Similar to the previous pump action rotating bolt design, this shotgun expresses improved features and a slightly different locking arrangement. A prototype rifle may have been developed based on this design and was likely the reason Winchester also purchased patent No. 345881.
The shotgun operates in the same manner as the previous Browning design, but now features right-side ejection. This iteration utilizes a slightly more conventional single locking lug, integral to the breech-block, which engages the lower recess of the ejection port. The carrier is simplified and the firing pin is automatically retracted with safety features to prevent an accidental discharge.
