US Patent 324297 was the second of four John Browning patents submitted in 1885, all being assigned to Winchester upon application. The action of this design is clearly derived from the work of Andrew Burgess, and therefore not listed among the patent claims. The patented features instead relate to the firing pin, carrier, ejector, and a safety feature for the receiver.

The arrangement of features within the action allow this rifle to be slightly more compact than similar designs, a hallmark of John Browning. Like most of Browning’s work at this time, however, the rifle prototype would be shelved within the walls of Winchester. None of the patented features appear to have been used in any subsequent Winchester designs.
