In 1881 an all-in-one loading tool was patented under the names of John and Matt Browning. It was unique for its compact form, considering the amount of features packed into a single tool. The Browning produced tools featured the trademark “J. M. BROWNING OGDEN . U . T” stamped on a flat surface along the outside of the cartridge chamber. The rest of the tool has a rough cast surface and was painted similar to contemporary Winchester loading tools.

The number of tools and calibers produced in the Browning Brothers factory are not well recorded or studied. It is speculated that as many as 200 may have been produced. Nor is it know precisely when the tools began to be produced, and for how long. Again, speculation suggests that design and production began in early to mid 1881. The tool came to the attention of Marlin, who purchased the patent in January of 1882. It was quickly put into production and appeared in the 1883 catalog.

The Marlin Loader, Model 1881 was issued as a three piece set, with a high polish blue finish. The set included the tool with its decapping pin and a polished brass powder dipper, supplied in a cardboard box with an instruction sheet. It was offered in the Marlin catalog from 1883 to 1887. Approximately 8000 tools were produced in 10 calibers.
